LAST AMENDED 2003-10-6. [In this document, "œ" is the "pounds" sign, and "ž" is the "by" sign.] DESKTOP: This is what _I_ bought, for _me_ - on about 1999-5-30. ======================================================= (It's out of date now, of course.) Motherboard [œ85]: Abit BX6 (5P/2I/1A, slot 1, ATX). 128M RAM [œ73]; 8.4 G HD [œ85]. Windows 95 OSR 2.x*. Wavetable, 3D, 4 speaker sound* [œ10]. Speakers - powered, 2 sets [œ5 each]. Video: Diamond Viper AGP (16M, 3D, MPEG-2 hardware) [œ89]. CD-RW (4/2/24 speed) [œ169] - replaced, see below. Processor: Celeron 333 [œ52]. Floppy - both sizes*. Printer (two-cartridge [HP 690C])*. MoDem - V90, external*. Multimedia keyboard*. Small trackerball*. Case (and power supply): ATX midi tower (with removable sides) [œ30]. 15"* monitor, digital controls. * - kept from my previous system. Added, 1999-10-23: ================== Pace TV and Radio card (œ49). After initial teething troubles (including removal of a short on the board - poor quality control, perhaps why they'd ceased trading!), it is now working well, giving me TV with NICAM sound and (quite sophisticated and fast) teletext, FM stereo radio, and capture of video stills & (15 frames per second) video clips (including from external S-VHS source). Added, 2000-1-12: ================= Fujifilm DX-10 digital still camera (arguably not part of the PC, though results mainly viewed on the PC) - œ199.99 (including extra 8M memory card on top of the 2M one normally included, and carry case). Works to my satisfaction - 1024 ž 768 or 640 ž 480 (I mostly use the latter, smaller, size). I am beginning to think I would like certain extra features (in particular optical zoom), but they tend only to be on ones with higher pixel figures, which I _don't_ particularly want. 2000-2-24: ========== Monitor in normal use upgraded to 17" (not bought). 2000-6: ======= Panasonic DVD-114 (DVD-ROM) drive added (œ110), and made region independent with Fekete Istvan's patch. It can't play PD cartridges. 2001-1-27: ========== Added 256M of PC133 RAM [œ84], making 384M in total. 2001-6-9: ========= Power supply upgraded to 300W (AMD approved, Pentium-IV ready) for about œ30 - not that extra power was needed, just that the supply that came with the original case was very noisy [acoustically, that is]. 2001-8-25: ========== Extra exhaust fan (œ5 on 2001-8-18) fitted (I'd been getting overheat alarms, mainly I think due to the very hot weather). Can't tell the effect yet, as the weather's been cooler anyway, but no alarms so far. 2001-10-27: =========== A4 flatbed scanner (CanoScan N656U, USB, 600 1200) and 40G second hard disc drive (œ69) added. Late 2001: ========== Processor changed to a Celeron 700, with large fan; clocking it at 1050 with no problems. (œ35 second-hand.) Early 2002: =========== 15" flatscreen monitor bought for use when travelling (œ299). 2002-2-16: ========== Internal controllerless MoDem, œ13. 2003-2: ======= CD-RW drive replaced with 48ž16ž48 one, with BURn-proofing (as earlier one had died), œ49.99. LAPTOP: 2003 Summer: ============ Laptop (Compaq Armada 1750), bought second-hand: PII/400 processor, 128M RAM, 10G hard disc, 14.1" screen, œ359. Can of course use monitors desktop system uses. External CD/RW drive, and TV/radio unit, added not long after original purchase. 2003-8-16: ========== 256M stick ("pen drive" type) [œ45] added (for use with both PCs).
